History

The BioGas industry has been around for many years, the earliest signs of use of BioGas go back to the Persians in 650AD. Only until recently it took a flight, mainly in Germany during the 80’s. Since that it has gained a lot of attention and interest from various sides.

What is BioGas?

BioGas is the current name commonly used for this industry in which biomass is converted into (methane) gas. The biomass can be a natural agricultural waste product or a special grown crop for the process.

pH value

The optimum biogas production is achieved when the pH value of input mixture in the digester is between 6 and 7. Note that this is the INPUT value, the optimum value in the fermentor should be between 7,6 and 7,8 pH.

Electrical Conductivity in soil

Measuring EC in soil can help you identify productivity differences.

Historically, farmers tend to apply the agricultural inputs (seeds, irrigation, fertilizers and pesticides uniformly on the entire field or in every pot, but at the end of the growing season  the crop yield/ or pot plants varies across the field or varies per pot. There are many reasons why this varies. But one of the major factors are the changes in soil properties. The ability of soil to hold and distribute water, fertilizers and pesticides near the roots changes as soil properties change. Therefore it is logical to apply different amounts of agricultural inputs to areas that has different soil properties. This is called “precision agriculture”. To practice precision agriculture a farmer has to know how  much EC there is in the soil. This gives a quick view where the soil differences and identifies where the soil changes across the field. To get a view of what the EC value in the soil is you have to measure. Eutech Instruments Europe has some models and sensors you can use to measure directly in soil. How this works you can read below in the new instruction manual we made.

To measure EC directly in soil

In greenhouses, the water given to plants is often re-used many times. The theory was that each time the plants absorb the oxygen from the water, as a result the water eventually contains too little oxygen and effects the growth of the plant.

Research conducted by Dutch companies TNO and DLV has now proofed that low oxygen levels have a negative effect on the growth of the plant.

That is why it is important that you are aware of the DO level of the water you serve in your greenhouse. You can measure this continuously with an DO controller or with a Hand-held meter. For more information about these instruments see the leaflets below.
